Hearn, Mills Move Into Prime Spots On Money List

It was a Californian who won the Nationwide Tour event on the weekend, but the Fresh Express Classic in Hayward, Calif., had a definite Canadian flavour to it, with two countrymen putting themselves in good position to regain PGA Tour cards for next season.

David Hearn

David Hearn - currently, 10th on the Nationwide money list

David Hearn of Brantford, Ont., took the tournament lead into the weekend and held it until the final round when a four-under 67 couldn’t hold off a charging Kevin Chappell of Fresno, Calif., who was six-under for the final round and finished at 20-under for the tournament.

Hearn shot all four rounds in the 60s, including a first round 64 and a second round 65, finished a shot back in second, while Jon Mills of Belleville, Ont., was third after also shooting all four rounds in the 60s to finish at 17-under.

The strong showings put both players in a position for a return to the PGA Tour, where Hearn played in 2005 and Mills competed in 2006 and 2008. Both are now in the top 25 on the Nationwide Tour money list, which would earn them a promotion for next year.

Their strong showings vaulted Hearn from 54th to 10th on the money list, while Mills jumped from 47th to 14th.

Hill, Taylor To Turn Pro:

Matt Hill of Bright’s Grove,Ont., is planning to turn pro right after defending the NCAA championship in June. Nick Taylor of Abbotsford, B.C., also says he’ll turn pro later this year.
Taylor, the low amateur at last year’s U.S. Open, was second in recent world amateur rankings, while Hill was 16th.
