Kane, DeLaet And Other Items Of Note

April 14, 2010 by

Lorie Kane has been working with Sean Foley, coach to several PGA Tour players including Stephen Ames, and fitness and nutrition consultant Dr. Craig Davies to tweak her swing and prevent discomfort in her hips.

“It had a lot to do with impact and where I was in the impact position – not very good,” said Kane, who has been working with Foley since last October. “As a result of that, I probably caused myself some discomfort in my left and right hips.”

The problem hit its peak last year at the CN Canadian Women’s Open at Priddis Greens near Calgary, where Kane missed the cut, one of seven missed cuts to finish off her 2009 LPGA Tour season.

“Last year in Calgary, it was very disappointing for me. I felt really good coming into the tournament. It’s just the fact that I had a tear in my right labrum and I still probably do, but I will not have surgery to correct it,” she said, adding that Foley and Davies have her turned in the right direction.

“They’ve been helping me to realign my body to get into the positions that I need to. I’m excited about what I’ve seen to date,” said Kane.

Graham On The Greens:

Graham DeLaet has gone back to the short putter and is working with putting coach Marius Filimater, who also works with Mike Weir. DeLaet says putting was a big factor in his recent tie for third at the Shell Houston Open.

“At the start of the year, I was hitting it pretty good and putting okay and then, I went through a period where I was not hitting it well and putting poorly and then, I would putt good for a week, but hit it bad,” he said of the inconsistency in the early part of his rookie year on the PGA Tour.

‘(The Houston Open) was the first time that I kind of really put it together with good ball striking and my short game was sharp as well,” he said. “Hopefully, I can keep that going.”

He’ll try to do that this week at the Verizon Heritage at Hilton Head, where both Ames and Weir are also competing.

Canadian Tour Back In Mexico:

The Canadian Tour kicks off its Mexican swing this week with the playing of the Corona Mazatlan Mexican Championship.

Last year at this time, the tour was forced to exit Mexico quickly with concerns about the outbreak of the H1N1 virus in that country, but things have settled down as the tour marks its ninth consecutive season with a visit to Mexico.

Next week, the tour will play the Riviera Nayarit Classic in Mexico.

The field that tees off Thursday will include 156 players from 17 countries including Canadians such as Ryan Yip, James Love, Wes Hefferan, Mike Mezei, Kent Eger, Peter Laws, Derek Gillespie, Brad Fritsch, J.C. Deacon and three-time Canadian Amateur champ Richard Scott.

  • Joey Sindelar, Scott Simpson and Mike Goodes have agreed to play in the inaugural Montreal Championship, a Champions Tour event to be played in July …
  • Last week, I referred to Hamilton Spectator writer Garry McKay a curmudgeon in this space, but McKay, who co-hosts the Canadian PGA Radio Show with Jeff Dykeman, had trouble distinguishing between curmudgeon and crustacean. That could be a result of McKay’s advanced years, but no matter. Both types of creatures are crusty and crabby, so either word applies. The current and archived editions of the Canadian PGA Radio Show can now be found via the link on the home page or within the INDUSTRY menu.
