CPGA Championship Close To Revival: Garron

March 24, 2010 by

With the PACE program passed at Wednesday’s Canadian PGA annual general meeting in Moncton, there is one other thing that Lindon Garron would have liked to have seen accomplished during his term of president, but it may not be far off.

The Canadian PGA Championship is now in its fifth year of dormancy after last being played in 2005 as a Nationwide Tour event.

Lindon Garron discusses the status of the CPGA Championship.

“It is high on the priority list for us and it always is, but we need the right player to be involved to allow us to move the Canadian PGA Championship back on to the schedule,” said Garron, who will be replaced as president by Glenn Cundari.

The right player he refers to is a title sponsor that sees the event as a good fit for its business in order to develop a strong, long-term relationship with the tournament.

“We’re very close. It’s encouraging. I think our board shares the same feeling that I do in that, if we’re going to bring the Canadian PGA Championship back, it needs to mean something for our members,” said Garron.

“Just to bring it back to play for the trophy, I think that is disrespectful to the history of that event,” he added.

“I appreciate the fact that we’ve gone through a couple of presidents and it hasn’t come back, but when it does come back, I think it will be of the stature that it should be and it would be nice to announce that in the near future,” he said.

“I know we’ve been having some really good talks with some various groups that are very interested in a proposal that we have in place.”
