Focus On Fitness Continues To Grow

March 2, 2010 by

It’s no secret that fitness has become an important aspect of golf the past few years, but I’m finding that the emphasis is starting to pick up even more.

At first, it was the really avid people who were taking an interest in fitness, but now it seems that for people just getting into the game, it’s really starting to kick in. They’re really starting to take note of it and realize what it can do for them and their games.

In the last couple of years, we’re fielding a lot more questions about it and people realize the benefits, not only from a golf perspective, but also from a lifestyle perspective and I think it’s great. For our game, keeping people involved longer is a very positive result of the emphasis on fitness.

I work with one of the guys from the Titleist Performance Institute, Jason Glass. He’s just opened a new studio up at Northview. He has a studio right on the driving range and he’s very busy.

When somebody comes to me, I have a decent knowledge, but if someone is really, really looking to get into it, I just give them Jason’s phone number and say call him.

Golf professionals are starting to adjust to this focus on fitness. Out here, there are an awful lot of professionals who are incorporating fitness into their programs.

Even three or four years ago, it would have been outside the box, but nowadays, you’ll get a lot of people, if they’re signing up for a big lessons package, actually ask why there’s no fitness aspect or no consultant.

People have been saying lately that 60 is the new 50 and 50 is the new 40 and that’s a positive statement that people in the prime demographic of golf want to believe. With that in mind, we can expect the fitness focus to continue to grow, with this year being no exception.

Great post Kyle… I incorporate fitness or at least assess it prior to getting into a long term client. I am a certified Golf Fitness Coach through Dr. Sean Fletch who heads up Swinglink a CPGA Certified program. I have a lot of students who are very interested in fitness and nutrition. Once they know the benefits of getting into a solid fitness and nutrition program they really get motivated and excited about what they can accomplish. If I am unable to attend to a physical ailment or limitation I immediately give them Dr. Fletch’s contact information. I think it’s very important that instructors and players are introduced to a fitness program. It really keeps our golf population active and healthy for a longer period of time.
