Hopefully, This Is A Good Sign …

Here at Point Roberts, we’ve managed to maintain some golfers, which is great in a season in which we’ve gotten no snow to this point.
The last few years, to this point, we usually get a couple of closures. The last couple of years – and our off-season runs roughly from November through March – we’ve been closed, I think 34 days two years ago and 31 days last year. We haven’t closed yet this off-season.
We’ve got another month-and-a-half left and they’re not really calling for much inclement weather in the long term, so we may catch a break this year. Business-wise, it’s great, time off-wise, it isn’t so great.
During the week, we may get 30 golfers per day, but on a really nice weekend day, it might be 80. I think around this time of the year, people just need to get a fix.
We get the odd spell in which we’ll go a week, a week-and-a-half where the course is basically unplayable just because of the rain, but if it’s not raining, they’re coming. They really just need to get out there, whether it’s for exercise, fresh air or just to be with the boys.
Whether this is a sign of things to come once the warm weather gets here remains to be seen. I guess you could say that we’re cautiously optimistic, but we don’t necessarily want to set our budgets to predict that happy days are here again.
I think we’re going to be marginally ahead. I’m really looking at it a couple of years out because I think, once the economy is back full force, it will take a little time because people have developed patterns of not playing as much. It will take time to get out of that.
I’m hoping this is the year that people are going to start thinking about golf again and, going forward the next few years, it will start to really rebound.
Hopefully, the number of people on the course out here is an indicator of that, but either way, we’re ready to greet them.
