Desire To Play Is There Even In Tough Times
January 6, 2010 by Kyle German
Kyle German, a PGA of British Columbia member working at the Point Roberts Golf and Country Club in Point Roberts, Wash., is feeling optimistic with 2010 upon us. With the economy turning around, he hopes there is enough pent-up desire to play the game to make it a good year.
I think the economy is going to come back. The unofficial news is that Canada is out of the recession and I go along with that.
I think the interest in the game has always been there. It’s just a matter of people having the time and the income, but I think the interest is still there and I hope that’s what drives a good year for the game. It’s been awhile since participation has been strong and I hope to see it make a rebound.
I don’t know if that’s what I really think, or if it’s a pipe dream, but from a golf course standpoint, we’re going to be doing a few things that we’re pretty excited about.
We’re going to be using new wetting agents. One of our biggest issues at Point Roberts is water. We don’t have enough.
As an area, we have to buy our water from Vancouver, so as a golf course, we get the leftovers. We don’t actually get enough water when it’s really hot out, which is the reason for the new wetting agents. We’re also going to be doing some new mow patterns and we’re looking at a few new pieces of equipment.
We’re pretty excited about what we’re going to be able to do for the golf course. From the research we’ve done, we’re looking forward to what it can do for us. We’re looking forward to this year and, hopefully, a lot of people come to see it.
There have been enough people out there who love the game and haven’t been able to partake as much as they’d like. Hopefully, this year will offer a little better opportunity for them to play.
Also, I hope the weather cooperates. You won’t hear this very often from a westerner, but I hope the east has a little better weather this year.
We had a great weather summer here. It was a late start, but once it got here, it was great and it stayed on until the end of October.
Hopefully, the entire country catches a break with weather.
