My Winter Getaway: Greg Dukart

Greg Dukart spent his formative years at the Wascana Country Club in Regina, a club he now serves as general manager. He says after working all over the world in places such as England, Prince Edward Island, Vancouver, Kamloops and Calgary, there is still one place that he regularly visits during the winter months.

When I grew up in Saskatchewan, all of my friends at the Wascana Country Club, where I’m now the general manager, used to go down to Phoenix/Scottsdale, so when I was a young man – 18, 19, 20 years old – I joined the migration.

Even though I’ve been fortunate to work around the world and see all kinds of different spots, I still migrate back to Phoenix/Scottsdale for some reason.

The weather is a big reason. With so many days of sunshine, there are also so many great golf courses to choose from in the area.

The Troon North property I like. I certainly like the Fairmont Scottsdale and TPC Scottsdale – that whole development is very, very special.

The Phoenician, Camelback and all of the older courses offer a nice mix. You can really have a nice holiday based on the new-look golf courses, then the old parkland courses are in there and I think they’re fantastic.

Off the golf course, there’s lots to do too.

You can go down to the older sections of Scottsdale and there used to be a restaurant down there called the Pink Pony which, I’m sad to say, closed down this summer.

It had been there forever and it hadn’t changed. There’s something special about keeping that same culture, mixing the old with the new for the best of both worlds. Even in its absence, there are endless restaurants that you can enjoy.

When I go down, I have a great time with such a laid-back daily routine that starts with getting up, having your breakfast, reading the paper and heading out to the golf course.

You hit a few balls, tee off, get in around 4-4:30, enjoy happy hour with a drink or two, back to the room for awhile, head out to the restaurants, back home at 9 or 10 and do it all over again the next day.

It’s a nice cycle.
