Callaway Diablo Gets Edgier

Callaway is getting edgier in 2010, with the introduction of its Diablo Edge family, including drivers, fairway woods, irons and hybrids.

Through face technology, a higher moment of inertia, deeper centre of gravity and better dynamics, Edge goes for distance in the Diablo Edge and Diablo Edge Tour drivers, which feature a four-piece modular design to position weight more efficiently.

Consistently high ball speed is the objective of a chemically-milled hyperbolic face cup that uses a chemical reduction process to remove unwanted material for precision thickness control.

An aerodynamic body design refines all edge transitions with the goal of reducing drag up to eight per cent over other 460 c.c. heads on the downswing to increase impact speeds.

The Diablo Edge drivers have a conventional head shape with a full length hosel, less face progression and a more forward centre of gravity and come with Aldila Habanero shafts.

Diablo Edge Fairway Woods

A new, more aggressive VFT face pattern offers a hotter face for greater ball speeds, while a high moment of inertia positions more weight in the extreme perimeter of the club for less clubhead twisting.

The standard fairway woods feature a deep centre of gravity to provide high, distance-enhancing trajectories, while the Diablo Edge Tour fairways have a low, shallow centre of gravity.

The standard models feature slightly larger clubheads and Callaway core technologies, while the Tour models have full hosels, less face progression and smaller, more conventional head shapes.

Diablo Edge Irons

These stainless steel irons have a lower, deeper centre of gravity that makes the sweet spot more accessible, based on where amateurs most commonly strike the ball on the clubface.

Players can opt for matched hybrids in the set to fill in where they struggle with their irons, which have a solid impact sole to lessen the effects of chunked and thin shots, while improving impact location on the face.

Other Callaway technologies in these irons include VFT, S2H2, a 360-degree undercut channel and modified tru-bore.

Diablo Forged Irons

A lower, deeper centre of gravity offers a penetrating trajectory for more distance, while the undercut cavity is designed to improve stability on off-centre hits and a thin, energy-efficient face is in place to increase ball speeds.

The forged steel perimeter-weighted body and precision-welded face combine for better feedback at impact, while a thin top line, narrow sole, shorter blade length and minimal offset offer shot-shaping ability.

Diablo Edge Hybrids

With standard and Tour models, different types of players have different options.

Vertical CG Optimization uses a thinner crown to allow for a lower centre of gravity, while the sole design helps create efficient impact on the face for distance and accuracy from a variety of turf conditions.

Meanwhile, the VFT Technology is designed to create higher ball speeds across the entire face and the offset hosel assists in squaring the clubface at impact.

Tour models have less offset to enhance workability.
