Can The CPGA Championship Be Revived?

November 29, 2009 by

Now that Steve Carroll has landed on his feet at the Royal Canadian Golf Association (see the GNN home page for more on that), the process is underway to find his replacement as executive director of the Canadian PGA.

The association is looking to get the new person in place by the end of this year and considering the last couple of weeks in December are pretty much write-offs due to the holidays, it wouldn’t be surprising to hear an announcement by about the middle of the month.

Whoever the new executive director is will have to hit the ground running on education and immediate matters such as the passing of the revised PACE program in March.

That person will also have to figure out how to work with the various zones across the country, as well as be brought up to snuff on matters concerning the National Allied Golf Association (NAGA).

Somewhere in all of that, the future of the once-proud Canadian PGA Championship will come up. Over the years, it has been a title once played for by PGA Tour stars and Canadian legends. It’s been a Nationwide Tour and Canadian Tour event over the years, but now it’s dormant.

The last time it was played was 2005 when it was a Nationwide Tour event and Canadian Jon Mills, who is taking part in the final stage of PGA Tour qualifying school this week, was the champion at Whistle Bear Golf Club in Cambridge, Ont.

There have been strong rumours about its revival in various forms since then, but it’s over four years since it was last played and you wonder with a new person coming in as executive director and a tough economy if it can be ready for 2010.

What do you think? Can the Canadian PGA Championship be revived? Be sure to cast your vote on the new GNN poll that is now up. As always, if you would like to expand on your thoughts, be sure to visit the GNN Forum and post your opinion.

Recognizing The Difference

Different rules for different people are not a bad thing when it comes to golf equipment, according to last week’s GNN Poll, which asked if the United States Golf Association should consider different sets of equipment guidelines for recreational players and professionals/high level amateurs.

As of Sunday afternoon, the poll said 65 per cent of respondents were in favour of two sets of rules with 35 per cent against.

That poll now goes into the archives, but if you would like to register your vote on this issue, it is still active.

The Canadian PGA Championship should be revived. This tournament has a lot of history with some great names winning and to see it fade away is terrible.

The Canadian PGA Championship needs to be brought back to life. This event has so much history and is too big part of the CPGA to be forgotten. In some shape or form this event needs to be come back.
