My Winter Golf Trip: Henry Brunton
November 24, 2009 by GNN
RCGA national men’s team coach Henry Brunton, the 2009 Ontario PGA Teacher of the Year for Juniors begins this series of GNN blogs from individuals within the Canadian golf industry talking about their favourite winter golf getaways. Brunton, who recently launched a new book “Journey to Excellence: The Young Golfer’s Complete Guide to Achievement and Personal Growth,” looks forward to the Dominican Republic.
My favourite place is Casa de Campo.
It’s a really unique environment. It’s got the international taste because you’re far enough away from North America and it’s got world-class golf with the Teeth of the Dog and several other courses.
It’s got the culture and the arts. It’s just a magnificent world-class resort, where golf professionals are made to feel very welcome. The director of golf there is a Canadian, Gilles Gagnon, who has been there for over 20 years.
If you love golf, it’s phenomenal and the atmosphere and ambience afterwards and before is wonderful.
The Teeth of the Dog is a big-time golf course from the back tees. If you’ve got wind blowing, which is often the case, you’d better have your A game on this Pete Dye design, but despite how you play, the views are magnificent and it’s just a thrill to play it and exhilarating to be there.
Away from the golf course, they have a great breakfast buffet set up that has all of the native foods. After golf, they have swimming pools, including a swim-up bar, and there’s a great beach on the property.
In the evening, they have a variety of very good restaurants and entertainment, including singers and bands. It’s got a very unique feel to it.
They’ve got transportation around the resort and, if you stay in the villas that are off the main hotel area, they give you a golf cart to drive around the resort. They also have a bus service.
It’s a spectacular place.
