Kyle Prepares To Defend

November 12, 2009 by

GNN blogger Kyle German says he can’t wait to get to Florida to defend the Titleist and FootJoy Canadian PGA Club Professionals Championship he won last year at the PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie. This year’s edition runs Nov. 23-25 and German says he a big challenge ahead from both the golf course and the rest of the field.

I really can’t wait to get down there.

It’s such good competition with so many good players. The CPGA does a great job of organizing it and the Titleist-FootJoy presence is great. The whole week is absolutely first class.

The PGA Golf Club treats you so well. I used to love the Ryder Course that we played before and obviously, I have pretty good feelings about the Wanamaker Course where I won last year.

For me, it’s a great week. At this time of year, it’s been raining here for about a month, so it’s nice to get away. I can room with a couple of buddies and have some fun.

The competition will be good. A guy like Danny King is still active in tournament golf. There are a lot of guys like me who did that a long time ago.

There are also a lot of guys who just like to compete. There are all different levels in the field, but all good players and it’s just really fun to be competing. That’s what all of us love.

I think Danny’s a perennial favourite. He’s won it twice and had some great success playing in the Ontario association. He’s been to Q-school many times and he’s got experience.

I played with Danny last year and had dinner with him a couple of times. He’s a good player, with the right attitude and desire. Danny’s going to be a favourite at the CPC and rightfully so.

The difficult thing about picking a winner in this tournament is that you rarely get a chance to play with a lot of the guys from across the country, particularly from the east in my case. This is the only chance I get to meet them and play with them.

Certainly, one name that stands out from out east is Gar Hamilton of the Mississaugua Golf and Country Club near Toronto. I’ve never actually met him, but how many times have I heard his name? A million.

I’d love to meet him and play with him, Even when I was new in the association, a young kid out of Delta, B.C., I knew the name Gar Hamilton.

Jeff Buder, a good buddy of mine from Point Grey in Vancouver, has had a couple of top finishes. He couldn’t be there last year because they had just remodeled their golf shop and they were just opening up that week.

He’s got a lot of experience as well. He’s played a few PGA Tour events and Nationwide events.

I think the guys with experience have a big advantage, but you never can tell.
