Danny King, a teaching professional at the Academy Tee at Magna in Aurora, Ont., and a two-time winner of the Titleist and FootJoy Canadian PGA Club Professionals Championship, was at the first stage of PGA Tour qualifying school recently at Cypresswood Golf Club in Spring, Tx., recently where he missed advancing by four shots. That being his seventh trip to Q-school, King thought of packing it in, but he is reconsidering his options.

I had a really good meeting with Mark Evershed. He’s a really intellectual man and I’ve got some things on the go in regards to getting out there again. Mechanically, it’s sound. What I’m doing is sound. I’m just missing that one ingredient.
I’ve been talking to Mark quite a bit. He’s got some ideas about developing a system. If you’re failing, there’s a reason and it could be the way you’re practicing is improper or something is wrong with the ingredients you’re putting into the oven.
In regards to mechanics, I made some good swing changes with Sean Foley. The ball-striking is great, but it was just one putt on each of the four days.
This is my seventh time at Q-school. The first three times it was more of a new experience. I was playing on more passion and grit than playing with sound mechanics.
The last four or five times were progressively getting better. My ball-striking at this last one was just phenomenal. It’s just one putt a day or half a shot or a wedge.
My first pick was to play the PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla., where we play the Club Professionals Championship, but it was full. The site in Texas was one that I’d gone to before and I like the facility.
I’ve got different responsibilities now. I’m tired of failing. I just believe that the definition of insanity is to keep repeating things that don’t work and, if I was going to do it, I’d have to be sure that I’m going back in with better odds.
Hopefully, we can come up with that ingredient that is the key to success.
In the meantime, we have the Club Professionals Championship coming up. I thing it’s a great competition and I like my chances.
Last year, I kind of fumbled a little bit in regards to some swing mechanics. I was a little uncomfortable, which is part and parcel of making swing changes.
The Wanamaker Course at the PGA Golf Club is a much more difficult course than the one we used to play. It’s a little bit more demanding on second shots into the green and off the tee, it demands a little more attention.
It’s a good golf course. You’ve got to be patient out there. On that last hole, par is a good score. It’s definitely a demanding hole and you’ve got to trust what you’re doing and hopefully this year, the pins aren’t as crazy as last year.
