Nike’s At Machspeed Again
October 22, 2009 by GNN
Nike is filling out its SQ Machspeed family with the addition of fairway woods and irons.
The fairway woods feature Total Swing Aerodynamic engineering that is used to move air faster across the sole, over the crown and around the skirt to increase swing speed and reduce drag throughout the swing.
The Machspeed fairways feature a tapered heel geometry and toe-side Nike PowerBow design to promote smooth air flow around the head for quicker acceleration off the start.
The PowerBow and sole diffuser designs are in place to keep airflow smooth and close to the club surface to reduce drag and encourage faster acceleration as the swing speed builds to its maximum through the ball.
The new SQ Machspeed irons are designed to combine high launch and increased distance.
“With Machspeed, we’ve developed a very fast iron through new and dynamic construction that works,” said Tom Stites, director of club creation for Nike Golf.
“This iron is all about helping golfers increase their ball speed in order to generate distance. Our patented Powerbow technology allows golfers to launch the ball high and increase distance, a perfect combination to improving your game,” added Stites.
To achieve speed and distance, the two-piece Machspeed irons have a higher CT (Characteristic Time) in the wider areas on the face for faster ball speeds and longer distance.
They feature new a combination of AM 355 alloy and an off-the-face weld construction for a thinner, hotter face, a wider sweet zone and hot centre area that expands lower on the face where the ball is more likely to be in contact to prevent a decrease in distance.
Nike’s Powerbow technology was first introduced in its earliest SQ product, the Nike SasQuatch driver in 2006, with the objective of creating an extremely deep centre of gravity and providing a wider sweet spot.
The SQ Machspeeds feature a deep undercut behind the face, which repositions 50 grams of weight out and back to the Powerbow for high launching shots.
Nike has rounded out the SQ Machspeed family with the introduction of hybrids, which also use Total Swing Aerodynamic technology for higher initial ball velocity and launch angle with less spin.
The SQ Machspeed hybrids use square technology by moving weight out and into the corners. A 455 thin steel face is in place to offer hotter response for longer shots.
