Search For CPGA Executive Director In High Gear

October 14, 2009 by

Steve Carroll’s reign as executive director of the Canadian PGA concludes at the end of this month and the search for his replacement is in full swing with the job posting now occupying the association website here.

The posting includes a job description, preferred experience, required expertise and the qualities, additional skills, abilities and experience that will be considered assets.

“Obviously, there’s some flexibility there,” said Canadian PGA president Lindon Garron. “We looked a while ago for someone in the marketing / communications side of our business, so some skill level there would be appropriate, but not necessary.

“It’s very similar to when we hired Steve, a little change in focus in some areas, even though the qualifications are very much the same,” added Garron.

A selection committee has been formed and is reviewing applications, which close at the end of October with a start date for the new person expected to be at the beginning of January.

Director of education Gary Bernard has been named interim executive director while Carroll takes care of some unfinished business before his departure.

“There were some areas he wanted to finish and this will give him more time to do that and Gary will focus on the day-to-day operation,” said Garron, noting that Carroll’s replacement will need to be a Canadian PGA member or have golf industry experience.

“One of the requirements is some intimate knowledge of golf in Canada and the Canadian PGA and that’s not to preclude other people, but certainly, that is a strong benefit of the new executive director. It will help with the learning curve, that’s for sure,” he said.

The reviewing and interviewing of executive director applicants is part of a busy schedule ahead for the Canadian PGA as Garron is currently traveling across the country to meet with the nine zones that are part of the association.

He will also take part in a meeting of the board of directors that takes place at the Titleist and FootJoy Canadian PGA Club Professionals Championship, Nov. 23-25 at the PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Whoever takes over from Carroll will quickly have to jump into action at the association’s annual general meeting next March when a revised version of the PACE (Professional Advancement and Career Enhancement) program is introduced after an earlier version was defeated last year.

Garron believes the new program will meet with the approval of members, but the new person will need to be up to snuff on that as well as other Canadian PGA matters by the time the AGM rolls around.

“I can assure you the person who is the successful candidate in becoming the next executive director will have to get up to speed pretty quickly, that’s for sure,” said Garron.
