Brunton Emphasizes Personal Growth In New Book

With a foreword from Johnny Miller, Canadian PGA Master Professional Henry Brunton is officially launching his book Journey to Excellence, The Young Golfer’s Complete Guide to Achievement and Personal Growth, written with Michael Grange of the Globe and Mail, today

“The motivation to do the book was really to help my fellow professionals who I know are dealing with a lot of the issues that I’m dealing with as a coach,” said Brunton, who has been the national men’s coach with the Royal Canadian Golf Association’s player development program since 1999.

“That is to educate young players and their parents on how to make sure that golf stays fun for everybody and for those who are excited about playing competitive golf, to give them honest, clear information, the positive experience to inspire them, but to also make sure they’re cautiously optimistic,” said Brunton.

Topics in the book include how the recruiting process works for obtaining a university scholarship, how to turn professional and what the odds are once a player does turn pro.

Brunton says golf can become like hockey in this country, where expectations of success can often mean overlooking the fun and healthy aspects of the game. “It’s not just in Canada, but it is certainly in Canada,” said Brunton, twice named to Golf Magazine’s Top 100 Teachers list.

“We want to encourage people to train and see how far they can get, explore their limits, but we want to make sure that golf is healthy for people and the game is fun and it’s always a positive in their lives, not just for the time that they compete,” he said.

Other topics in the book include the art of effective practice, how to optimize equipment, the mental skills used by champion golfers, strength training and nutrition keys, among others. Brunton says the book can also benefit golf professionals as well as young players and their parents.
